Introduction
On the typical residential job site, hardly a day goes by without some question
being raised. How could we do that faster? Is there a better way? What's the
strongest - or most durable - method? How do I install this product?
Even after a project is built, the questions continue. Why is there
condensation in the attic? What's causing those black spots? Why is the exterior
finish flaking?
This book gathers together questions that builders have sent JLC over the past
decade, and provides answers written by the most capable experts we could find.
We weren't able to include all the questions we've received, so we chose ones
that seemed most representative of the common experience of builders everywhere.
Many of the questions have simple, straightforward answers. But some of the
answers are less clear-cut -- attempts to troubleshoot perplexing situations, to
arrive at a plausible explanation for a baffling set of conditions. For me,
these are among the most interesting: they don't so much tell you what to
think as how to think about unexpected results on the job.
We hope you enjoy the book and find it useful. And as new questions arise, we
hope you'll ask us. We welcome every opportunity to do what we do best: provide
sound, practical information you can build by.
